Since 1979, La Balsa has not only been a gastronomic landmark of Mediterranean cuisine in Barcelona, but also an architecturally unique space. Located in a former water reservoir, on the edge between the city and nature, the restaurant is a work of art in itself. Many of our diners may not know it, but the building that houses La Balsa was awarded the prestigious FAD Architecture Prize the year it opened.
Organic Architecture and Integration with the Surroundings
Designed by architects Ramon Maria Puig and Lluís Clotet, La Balsa stood out from the beginning for its architecture that engages in dialogue with the vegetation, the slope of the land, and natural light. With a structure reminiscent of a large wooden cabin elevated among trees, the project embraces the idea of a refuge open to the landscape—inviting not only to eat, but to breathe, contemplate, and connect with nature.

What was once a water basin has become a charming terrace surrounded by greenery, welcoming generations of Barcelonans for celebrations, family lunches, and romantic evenings.
FAD Prize: A highly prestigious distinction
The FAD Architecture Prize awarded to La Balsa in 1979 recognized the project's excellence in integrating with its surroundings, using natural materials, and proposing an architectural style that blends with the landscape. We're not just talking about a restaurant—we're talking about a space where architecture serves the experience, where food, light, and air become part of the same composition.
